Older man with sore back in bed

Is Getting Old a Choice?

I recently encountered several people in the 60+ age range and I was fascinated with their stories. None of them know me, nor would they know that I’m now over 65 myself.

One man kept saying, “Well, I’m old now, so…”  Another lady would complain about her aches and pains to me, and say, “It’s just what sucks about getting old.” Yet another said, “I’m old now and in too much pain to…” (I was stunned to learn later in the conversation that she was 5 years younger that me!)

How about you?

Do you start the day thinking about how old you are? Do you complain to others about your ailments and convince yourself that you can’t do the things you used to love doing?

Arthritis, in any form, is not comfortable – I know!

Not for a moment do I want to diminish the level of pain, stiffness, and resulting frustration that comes when movement is hindered. Goodness, I often joke that my day is decided by how my body feels when I get up in the morning. Maybe you will identify.

There is also the reality (especially for osteoarthritis) – that you could blame your Mom for it. Many forms of arthritis are genetic.

We DO have the condition and we do experience symptoms – that is not in dispute.

What I am challenging is how you think about yourself and your body aches. Do you give up, or search for options? Do you just “take a pill for it” – or do you actively look to eliminate or curtail the causes?

We live in a sad era of wanting instant relief – and we get it from painkillers, cortisone shots, joint replacements… So, it’s hard to imagine that maybe there are other options, outside of traditional medical response. Our entire medical system seems to be geared toward treating symptoms, rather than eliminating the root causes. (Insurance companies are driving this – but that’s a rant for another day!)

The "old days" of having a family doctor that you know, like, and trust - are long gone. Without disrespect to some amazing doctors and specialists out there, we are living in a world of the instant fix, where treating symptoms with medications is the norm. NSAID's are one of those instant fixes that often get abused by the patient, not just the doctor, who may over-prescribe them. I've written before about the dangers of long term use of anti-inflammatory drugs.

If WE take responsibility and ownership for our health, perhaps WE can drive a new trend toward prevention, and if that; snot possible, then push to treat the causes, not only the symptoms.

This trend is not just in the world of arthritis and joint inflammation. It’s prevalent in the world of gastrointestinal health, too. The era of the “little purple pill” has set people up for long term health issues that arise from continual use of acid blockers (PPI's– proton pump inhibitors.) These are fine in the short term, but long term – just as anti-inflammatory drugs are bad – they do more harm than good. So, you take a pill to prevent the acid in your stomach but still eat spicy foods, or overindulge at a holiday table.

Taking anti-inflammatory drugs may take the pain away, but if you keep eating inflammatory foods, you’ve set yourself up for a loser cycle!

The same people who complain about pain, and “getting old” – are the folks who resist natural solutions. The gradual (aka slow) re-setting within the body’s system gives you much better relief in the long term – but it does take patience.

You also can’t get insurance to pay for supplements, and the cost of natural ingredients are often higher, too. I get it!

I would encourage you to do 2 things today:

  • Recognize that age is just a number. You are not old, unless you CHOOSE to be. (Your behavior will always follow your mindset, remember.)
  • Acknowledge that natural solutions are often a lot better for longevity, wellness, and long-term health.
